- Baku Yumemakura (1951–) is known in Japan as a rabid fan of pro wrestling and combat sports, and also as a fisherman, mountain climber, and world traveler who frequently incorporates his adventures into his writings—which are not only prolific but spread across a variety of genres. By his own description, his trademark is "sex, violence, and the occult." With his sights set on becoming an author from the time he was ten, he completed a Japanese literature major in college, and made his literary debut in 1977 with an avant-garde work in which he used letters as pictographs and symbols, a style of writing he dubbed "typografiction." He brought a breath of fresh air to the genre of supernatural tales and rose to bestsellerdom with his Genju shonen Kimaira (Mythical Beast Chimera) series, starting in 1982, and his Majogari (Psychodiver) series, launched in 1984. He won the 1989 Japan SF Grand Prize for Jogen no tsuki o taberu shishi (The Lion that Ate the Crescent Moon), and the 1998 Shibata Renzaburo Award for Kamigami no itadaki (Peak of the Gods), a novel about scaling Mt. Everest. In 2012 he received the Yoshikawa Eiji Prize for Literature for his period novel Oedo chokaku den (The Covert Anglers of Edo). Among his other works is the supernatural fantasy series Onmyoji (The Yin Yang Master, 1988–), set in 10th-century Japan, which was adapted into a blockbuster film in 2001 with a sequel in 2003.
