I really liked the first half of the book...the second half not so much...learned about civil war in this country. the
tsunami which killed so many...not a place I really need to see.

"An American Sojourn in Sri Lanka" is the author's memoir in two parts about her time spent in Sri Lanka. the first part, soon after 9/11, tells of the time she went accompanied by her young son to the country in order to teach university literature. The second part occurs after the tsunami in 2009. A lot of history of the country is presented, the war between the different factions, but I was hoping for more reflection on the author's part. It was still an enjoyable read.

A very nice narrative on the contemporary happenings in this paradise lost. A fairly detailed account of the progroms run by the fanatical JVP. The ongoing violence perptrated by the Tamil Tigers and how it has affected and continues to affect the life of the people in this torn land. Apart from this, it does not delve very deeply into the rich early history of this island save a page or two.
