Churchill: A Study in Greatness von Geoffrey Best
Winston Churchill's inspiring leadership in the Second World War once put him above criticism. In recent years his record has come under attack. This book makes sense of this extraordinary man and his controversial and heroic career. Best brings out Churchill's strengths and weaknesses, looking past the many received versions of Churchill in a biography that balances the private and the public man and offers a fresh insight into his character
this is largely a review of WSC's various writings on war. He adds a small amount of biographical material, but with such a well known figure, there's no need to more than indicate. There is more material on the post-1945 WSC than I thought. Best feels that WSC reveals little more than the attitudes of the late 19th & 20th century, coupled with a fascination with technology, and on occasion pushing that technology too far. WSC got his head around the end of the world if the H-bombs were seriously used, and I was unaware of how tightly the USA clutched its nuclear knowledgs even after the Lend-Lease sharing had worked so well for them.… (mehr)
Concise, interesting, somewhat hagiographical. Can serve as a good introduction to Winston Churchill and his time.
