Freeman Wills Crofts, the ‘King of Detective Story Writers’, was one of the pre-eminent writers in the golden age of British crime fiction. Acclaimed by his contemporaries, Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler, he wrote more than 30 detective novels and was a founder member of the hugely influential DETECTIVE CLUB. Crofts’s most famous creation was Scotland Yard detective, Inspector French (‘As near the real thing as any sleuth in fiction’ THE SUNDAY TIMES).
Born in Dublin, Crofts became an engineer and wrote his debut novel, THE CASK: A DETECTIVE STORY (‘An imaginatively ingenious mystery’ THE EVENING STANDARD) in 1919 during a long absence from work due to illness. He became a full-time writer in 1929 and moved to England with his wife Mary to live in Guildford. He died in 1957.

A complicated murder plot takes Inspector French on a frustrating investigation. It shows his determination to solve the case.
It's a plot driven story in the English countryside. The characters do not get developed but the complexity of the plot makes up for that.
Good reading for fans of traditional English detective stories.

Anne Day has recently lost her father and as he was a Vicar she has lost her home, now she has a chance at being a housekeeper for the Grinsmead famlily in their house Frayle (back when people had multiple servants, including a maid, a cook and a governess). Mrs Grinsmede is somewhat paranoid and convince that someone wants to kill her, which proves prophetic. The first of the locked room deaths; her's could be construed as suicide but Anne has her doubts. When Mr Grinsmede turns up dead in his room, again a locked room mystery it also looks like suicide but something is off to both Anne and when Inspector French becomes involved in the mystery, he's also not sure but he feels a need to ferret out the truth.
Interesting to see how the twists and turns resolve.

Set inter-war. Maxwell Cheyne served in the navy and was invalided out after a uboat incident and now he's settled to a life of writing and puttering about on his motorbike (i really did have to smile at the idea of speeding along at 35 miles per hour!) but it did give him a feel of an inter-war intrepid hero. For all that he had military training he is terribly naïve and keeps falling for schemes and being rendered unconscious. And trusting the completely wrong people, most of the time, and occasionally the right people. There is a romance in the story and it's the usual interwar glances and subsumed passion until it isn't.
Inspector French doesn't enter the picture until about half-way through, when thing get less dangerous for Cheyne and his love interest and fellow detective Joan Merril (who saves him at one stage) and the mystery unravells. There is some travel on the continent but overall it's an entertaining story of one man and his adventures in not getting killed because he might know something.

Pretty good book. Nothing super exciting but it messes with the traditional format in a neat way while still having a satisfying and interesting actual mystery.

It's set up sort of like a "reverse whodunnit" but even stronger - it takes a long time for you to find out who's going to get murdered with multiple false hints as to who the victim will be and things only really get going like... halfwayish through? It works well, things get set up nicely and the build-up is well done. His character writing is hardly Nobel Literature level but the characters make sense and you get a good idea of their distinct personality and motives - they're more than flat stereotypes. The mystery itself is built around a single conceit but it's pretty ingenious and I liked it

MASSIVE ending spoiler

The very ending is hilarious in a very grim way. The main character is redeemed by confessing to being an accessory to murder, and so he's going to be hanged. But it's ok cause he's come right with God! Incredible. I love it
