What a wonderfully unique concept entangled with a sweet love story! Set in New Zealand, the world is divided between g-altered human hybrids, and ‘pure’ humans. The Defense Department is tasked with ‘maintaining’ control, and the g-altered humans are often targeted for experimentation, utilization and far too often, extermination. Siobhan has cat genes, a relatively common alteration, but has managed to ‘contain’ her cat-like reflexes, startle reflex and her purring, in most situations. During a rare night out with her friends, she is accosted by a drunken Defense agent and rescued by James, a stunningly handsome, intelligent and caring man; who also happens to have the ability to stop time.
Written in short form, with a palpable sense of tension surrounding the characters and their secrets, the author has managed to create a world that is unlike any I have seen before. The characters are tightly drawn and detailed, with funny but accurate descriptions of the animal tendencies that Siobhan tries to conceal. While the setting is 50 years in the future, most of the scenery is familiar and comforting, for the action and possibilities are quite unsettling. A terrifically fun and engaging read, with a great stopping point that sets up a sequel perfectly.
