Cheryl Lanham was born on 11 October 1948 in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia, USA. Her family moved to Southern California in 1959 and she grew up in Pasadena. After graduating from California State University, she decided to work her way around the world and took off for England. She didn’t get much further because she met Richard James Arguile, the Englishman who became her husband, got married on May 1976, and had two children, Matthew and Amanda. While working in international shipping, she decided to pursue her dream and become a writer – which, of course, is the best job ever. She has written romance novels as Sarah Temple, and Young Adult novels as Cheryl Lanham. As Emily Brightwell, she is the author of the “Mrs. Jeffries” mysteries.

Cheryl Lanham Arguile returned to California, where she lives with her husband and a cranky old cat named Kiwi.

Inspector Gerald Witherspoon of Scotland Yard has very little confidence in dealing with women, but his housekeeper Mrs. Jeffries is determined to find a match for him. She arranges things such that he finds himself in the position of escorting his neighbour, Lady Cannonberry, to a society ball; guests invited include the members of the Hyde Park Literary Circle, of which Lady Cannonberry is a member. The Inspector is nervous about the event, but he soon discovers that he and Lady Cannonberry share a great enthusiasm for trains, and he suddenly finds that he is enjoying himself - that is, until Mrs. Greenwood, another member of the Literary Circle, falls from an upper floor with a knife in her back. As a result, Inspector Witherspoon is plunged into yet another murder inquiry in which he has no idea of even where to begin; luckily, he has the clandestine help of Mrs. Jeffries and the rest of the household staff to help him find his way…. This is the fifth book in this cozy series set in Victorian London, and it continues to charm with its very believable characters (some quite wonderful, some definitely not) and the way in which the various conspirators use their various skills to aid the Inspector; we also get a first hint of something not quite as it seems with one of the staff members, about which I hope to learn more in the next few outings with Mrs. Jeffries. Recommended.… (mehr)

A body is pulled from the Thames, but as he had been shot the case must be investigated as a murder. Inspector Gerald Witherspoon is happy to discover that Inspector Nevins should be assigned to it, but alas it turns out that Nevins knew the victim and so cannot investigate, and solving the crime therefore falls to Witherspoon yet again. Although it takes little time to identify the corpse and to discover that he had been running a con on some wealthy investors, it takes all of the powers of the Inspector and his household staff to learn anything at all about the man himself - aside from the fact that he had many, many enemies…. The fourth book in this cozy Victorian series, like the others, relies on the charm of its main characters, including the housekeeper Mrs. Jeffries, the kind-hearted Inspector himself, and the household maid, footman, cook and groom who combine their talents to surreptitiously aid the rather incompetent Inspector in his quest for truth. One nice thing about this series is that the Inspector really is kind-hearted and really does have a strong sense of justice, it’s just that he doesn’t always (or even often) know how to go about investigating crime. Slight reading, but quite amusing; recommended.… (mehr)

Inspector Gerald Witherspoon is quite hopeful, when a woman is murdered in the course of a burglary, that the case will be handed over to Inspector Nevins, who is after all the authority on robbery at Scotland Yard. It does seem a rather cut-and-dried case, but Inspector Witherspoon’s housekeeper, Mrs. Hepzibah Jeffries, is unconvinced: after all, what burglar would take trinkets and leave behind more valuable jewelry, and what burglar would open the closed door of the woman’s bedroom in order to shoot her when all he or they needed to do was to vacate the otherwise-empty house? Sadly for the Inspector, Mrs. Jeffries’ analysis is once more proven correct, and he is stuck with trying to solve the case, but fortunately for him, Mrs. Jeffries and the rest of the household staff are able and willing to work on the case behind his back…. This is the third book (of more than 40!) in this cozy series and like the earlier ones, it is a quick and breezy read, with well-drawn characters, a nicely nuanced setting (Victorian London in the 1880s) and a little bit of proto-feminist thinking (from Mrs. Jeffries only) thrown in for good measure. The Inspector is growing on me, although he is sometimes portrayed as perhaps just a bit too thick, and Mrs. Jeffries and her cohorts are generally quite good companions. And this time they acquire a dog too! As light reading, recommended.… (mehr)

Luty Belle Crookshank, neighbour of Inspector Gerald Witherspoon of Scotland Yard, asks the Inspector’s housekeeper, Hepzibah Jeffries, to try to find a missing friend, Mary Sparks, a housemaid in a nearby house who had been let go from her job after being accused of stealing a brooch. That happened two months ago, but Luty Belle was off in Venice during that time and only recently returned, and she was worried about Mary because she didn’t hear from her at all during those months. Mrs. Jeffries and her fellow staff members of the Inspector’s household are willing to look, but they are forestalled when the Inspector is given the case of a murdered young woman, who happens to have been killed two months ago and who was wearing a brooch. However much Luty Belle doesn’t want to believe it, it appears that the two cases are connected and not in any good way….This is the second of many books in the cozy series featuring clever and resourceful Mrs. Jeffries and her rather less prepossessing employer, Inspector Witherspoon, set in London in the 1880s. The mystery is well plotted, and the secondary characters are nicely drawn, but it is the relationship between Mrs. Jeffries and the Inspector that sets this series apart; I’m quite enjoying discovering this series and plan to keep reading; recommended!… (mehr)
