Once again Maine's mixture of mystery and, mostly realistic, SF makes a good story. As with most of Maine's books this one has good characters and a good story with a little Science Fiction in the mix. His SF is not far in the future or involving aliens. His style of SF is about real people in the 20th century who are using technology just beyond what he saw around him. There were no western launched satellites in his day but he knew they were coming.
I never expect to give his books more then three stars but he surprised me with this one.… (mehr)

Charles Eric Maine is an interesting writer. Some of this British author's other works have a bit Raymond Chandler mixed with SF. Not all of his books are good but I will read every one of them to find the jewels. This book is one of the jewels. It is a fun and disturbing read.

This is an early effort to realistically describe Moon science. For a 1957 book about a moon landing/crash it is very well researched and imagined. It focuses on the struggle for survival against the elements by flawed individuals. If the moon doesn't kill you the battle for the remaining resources will. Maybe there are no heroes. A scientist is murdered during an experiment in time travel…and finds himself in the body of a man several decades in the future. He then begins a series of deaths, and awakenings, into the future; until he returns to his past. Maine wrote this book in 1955 and manages to capture a bit of 21st Century zeitgeist. It's not a very exciting story...but a very thought-provoking one.
