Herman Raphael (1916–2009)

This collection of short stories was meant to be read and studied by high school students in the 1960s. It's an excellent collection of different authors and stories with emphasis on different things, e.g. narrative plot, character, place, etc. Challenging words are defined to cut down on dictionary time (though all of these words are well known to serious adult readers). I've been reading the pedagogical material at the end of each story that asks questions and explores vocabulary through etymolgy. I am not sure this book is still available but if you can pick it up for a buck at an used books store or encounter it on you bookshelf like I did it is well worth the read.… (mehr)
