I made a similar plea a while back for a more literary style of vampire book, and someone kindly recommended
Sunshine by
Robin McKinley, which I ended up enjoying. It's not part of a series (so far!) and it left me wondering why the author hasn't written a sequel, but you might like it. I haven't read any
Laurell K. Hamilton though.

Unfortunately,
Robin McKinley isn't really a series writer. It would be awesome if there was a Sunshine series.
I agree with you about the Anita Blake series. I very much enjoyed the books through
Obsidian Butterfly, but haven't even bothered to read the latest additions. What a change!
Unfortunately, I don't have anything useful to suggest instead. I think part of the reason the early Anita books were so enjoyable is that there really isn't anything else like them out there. Not to say that there aren't good vampire books, but they just don't have the same "feel" as the Anita books.
Sorry - guess that wasn't very helpful.
I've been just finished
Full Moon Rising by Melbourne author
Keri Arthur. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to reading others. It wasn't so much clan-based, but definitely a universe where both vampire and werewolves are other competing social structure to the more limited humans.
Unfortunately she seems easier to find and buy in the US than her in Australia...Reading the amazon reviews, readers of her earlier works seem to like her later works more. Hope that helps.
What about
Kindred by
Octavia Butler? Admittedly, I haven't read it, but it's gotten nice reviews and the stuff of her's I have read has been quite good.
Touch the Dark is probably the most
Hamiltonian of the books of this type I have read it is supposed to be the first in a series.

How about
Nancy Baker? I read her when I was in high school and am thinking of ordering her because I kept thinking about the novel that I really liked. Has anybody tried her?
I love
Sunshine, by the way, and was looking for fanfics until I read that the author asked the fics not be hosted or something. The story is dying for a sequel I tell you hehe.

SimonW11 -
Touch the Dark looks very interesting! I've added that to my TBR list as well. Thanks for mentioning it.
Hmm, well just in case if someone thinks it appeals to you because you fit the profile in my review. I suggest you don't meet anybody you only know from the internet for a while.

Also check out
Jeanne C. Stein's vampire series. I believe the first book is called
The Becoming? Upon finishing the two books available I was stunned by how similar it was to the earlier Anita Blake books.. it's worth a shot.
I got
Fantasy Lover years ago, because it was compared to the
Anita Blake series, and I was deeply disappointed. It is a long time since I read it, but to me it seemed like a romance with a bit of paranormal thrown in for appeal. And not a particularly good romance at that.
I like the
Sookie Stackhouse books, so my recommendations may be off, but I'll second the
Sunshine and
Touch The Dark &
Claimed by Shadow. If it dosn't matter to you whether the protagonist is male or female
The Halflife Chronicles - at least the first book - has an interesting description of a Vampire Domain. And it a good book too.
