Welcome to my second thread.
I would like to introduce a historical site of Zürich the 'Wasserkirche' (Water Chruch) which was built on a small island in the Limmat (River) situated between the two main churches of medieval Zürich.
It is said that this place was chosen due to a very old stone which is now in the crypt of the church. This stone was likely used for cultic congregations since antiquity and in medieval tradition taken to be the place of execution of Saints Felix and Regula which are Zürich's patron saints. A first church was built in the 10th century, and reconstructed in various stages, culminating in a complete reconstruction completed in 1486. In the course of the Reformation, the Wasserkirche was identified as a place of idolatry, and it was secularised, becoming the first public library of Zürich in 1634, which became a focus of learning that greatly contributed to the foundation of University of Zürich in the 19th century. The library was merged into the Zentralbibliothek in 1917, and the church was used as a storage room for crops for some time, until reconstruction work and archaeological excavations were undertaken in 1940.

I phoned my colleague and she is far away to be called to be on the mend. I told her that she should see her doctor and stay at home the whole week. Than I phoned my friend who will teach my class when I have my extra holiday in ten days and asked her if she could come on Wednesday to give me a hand. Luckily she is available and I'm very happy. This evening we have a meeting with Marina's oboe teacher and later I'll go to the gym for my work-out.

This was an enjoyable reading. I liked the very personal insight of Fuller's family history, especially that of her mother, and their view of some African political events which were told in the world press differently. These very personal memories make this story so diversified and interesting. It's amazing how Nicola Fuller always found a way back to life even though with all those tragic moments she escaped into her own world. I admire her strength for every comeback. There were parts which made me reflective but there were parts I had to laugh out loud.

TIOLI Challenge February #8
This was a quick reading which I enjoyed from the following points:
Firstly, I know Vevey very well. It's a beautiful place at the lake of Geneva for my taste a bit too old-fashioned traditional luxury but nevertheless a stunningly view over the lake and the Savoy Alpes.
Secondly, the main discussion about the etiquette at the time when this story was written is very interesting. On the one hand there is the very traditional Europe where there were strict rules how somebody has to behave and on the other hand tourists from the USA who bring a bit another comprehension of those etiquettes but nevertheless are trying to assimilate the circumstances of the European kind of life.
Unfortunately, Miss Daisy Miller isn't able to accept those rules. She is a young lady who would like to be loved but has no idea how she will be successful. Therefore she infringes all form of etiquettes and tempts fate.

Barbara, I'm so sorry that you are still feeling ill. I certainly hope that you are better for your vacation. The travel program that I saw was about Switzerland only and just a few of the cities. Very beautiful.
132Ameise1
Thanks Catarina, will see what the doctor is saying tomorrow. I'm glad that you saw some beautiful spots of Switzerland.

Hi Barbara - I envy you your two weeks holiday and hope that you are fully recovered to enjoy it.

I hope that you soon shake what ails you so that you're able to enjoy the holiday. Take care of yourself!!! Look at Davos for me - The Magic Mountain is one of my favorite BIG books.

The flu this year in Switzerland is one of the strongest they say and the epidemic hasn't reached the peak. I'm glad that we are here now. Yesterday with the packing and traveling was awful I had to cry a lot because my strength are nowhere. Now I can take the time needed to recover.
Peggy, I love the The Magic Mountain, too. I try to post a picture of 'Schatzalp' later this week with its gorgeous Grand Hotel.

Thomas and I took a little stroll so that I could get some healing Davos air. First we did some grocery and ended up soon in the Kaffi Klatsch where we had some sweets and coffee. As you can see on the photos it's snowing and on the peaks there is storm up to 100 km/h.

I'll post later this week about Schatzalp and the Manns. I love The Magic Mountain and all other Mann books.

I'm sorry that you're still under the weather, Barbara. I have to say, though, sick or not, staying behind in with a good book by the fireplace and letting the others go out in the cold to ski sounds pretty perfect to me! Ha!
172Ameise1
>170 johnsimpson: John, Marina is saying thanks a lot for your lovely birthday wishes. I feel indeed a bit better but I haven't gained much strength. The girls came back from skiing reporting that the sight was awful and that they could only take a few slopes due to the bad sight and storm.
>171 scaifea: Amber, my words too. After doing the grocery I have a nice cup if coffee and my book. Therefore I have nothing to complain. :-)

I need more strength before I go skiing. So I enjoy the sun and the reading. :-)

Hi Barb. Up and down it seems to go for you. I've enjoyed hearing about your trip, your daughter's birthday, and the shopping and reading. I'm sorry that you're having a bit of a relapse. It is hard to not do anything and try to recover when you're on holiday.
I hope that today is the day you get over it!

Barbara - I was not familiar with Schatzalp so I googled it. Such a beautiful view from there. I'm sorry that you are not feeling well still. I hope you will be able to go tomorrow. The web site said that it was sunny but was 6 degrees!! We are going to be getting some very cold weather here in Baltimore in the next couple of days - some of those very low temperatures but unfortunately, not the beautiful views.
