Crushed corners

Hello, two questions:

Firstly apologies if this has been covered but I was wondering what can be done to save or repair this book that has arrived with a crushed corner. The seller did not reinforce the corners for shipping and only wrapped in one layer of thin bubble wrap and brown packing paper.

Secondly, what can I do with this? It seems like mould is growing

>1 ironjaw: Those pictures hurt my eyes, especially since the damage could have been prevented with better packing. I'm sorry I have no book repair experience to offer, so I'm really just commiserating.

Have you tried asking for a refund? (and no, you shouldn't be saddled with the task of mailing the book back!)

That's not just a crushed corner; that looks like the spine is broken.

I would absolutely ask for a refund.

I certainly would not put a book with visible mould anywhere near my other books. You should ask for your money back. If they want you to return it, they should pay you shipping costs in advance.

Is there any way of treating the mould? Or would this go down the bin? I don't like getting rid of books, but I don't want to spread any mould to my other books

Do the pages currently feel damp? If they're not, I don't think the mould will be growing, and provided your books are in a reasonably dry place I can't see it spreading to anything else. Fungal spores seem to be present just about everywhere, but not to develop except under favourable circumstances - if a wall, or a pile of books, is damp for a while, mould will turn up fairly soon regardless of whether there's any to be seen anywhere else in the vicinity. So, personally, I'd not worry about having such books in my library, but I'm using a dehumidifier to keep its relative humidity at around 45-50% all year round with the aim of ensuring that issues like foxing - plenty of that here, as many of the texts I want to live with can hardly be found in copies free of it - don't get any worse or spread to where they're not. I don't think any type of mould would make progress in that atmosphere.

>6 terebinth: thank you. I was able to get a full refund for the books and will know later whether the seller wants them back. But if not is there any remedy or anything that can be used on the mould at the bottom of the text?

Since way before COVID, every time I receive a book I wipe the hardback covers with a gentle disinfectant spray using a tissue
