I found the characters realistic and enjoyed the setting. The storyline was rather interesting. It's epic fantasy, so it had many of that genre's familiar elements. However, I found that it was told in a unique, attention grabbing way. As a whole, I liked this story. By the end I felt there may have been a little something missing, but that's probably because this is the first increment of a trilogy. I hope I get a chance to read the rest of this series at some point. It would also be nice to see a book like this turned into a full budget motion picture. Http://www.goodbookswithtea.blogspot.com A friend from my reading group ( http://www.goodbookswithtea.blogspot.com ) recommended I read this book. They promised it would be fast paced, entertaining, and my "new favorite" novel. I must confess I'm surprised by how accurate that turned out to be. The author has a way about his writing that keeps readers engaged. This story is an "epic fantasy/adventure" novel that will transport it's readers to a spectacular land of magic. If you're a fan of mythical tales, this needs to be on your "to-read" list. My Book Club's Blog: http://www.goodbookswithtea.blogspot.com It's always so bittersweet to start a long book with characters that are so easy to get attached to. On one hand I feel a sense of achievement and excitement that I finished this book, while I'm sad I have nothing left to read about the characters I spent so much time reading about. There are characters you'll love to hate, and there are others who fit the brave and loyal hero role, perfectly. This is your very definition of an epic fantasy! There's so much action with amazingly described battle scenes. The story flows well once you get the hang of how it transitions from each scene. The story as a whole is an investment for the reader. There is so much going on here, and a lot of information that you must absorb to fully understand the plot. There is so much in this book with dragons, wizards, elves, mystical creatures and you wrap them all up with high adventure and you've got a pretty great book! Not all prophecies are set in stone nor are they known to world at large. When the elder refuses a gift from his younger brother he breaks a prophecy just as it is set in motion. Meanwhile a power hungry wizard and his witch daughter seek to release a monstrous demon of legend to steal his power. I've got mixed feelings about this book. It's a good read, with decent character development and a strong plot. But there are so many loose ends and missing pieces at the end of the 500+ pages. The author has a habit of throwing challenges and tropes in the characters way, and some of them don't make sense - like leaving the magical sword-of-destiny on the forest floor while the owner goes bird chasing so his friend can die a very gruesome death trying to retrieve it. Vengeance is sworn then the friend is forgotten for the rest of book. The instant love between the witch and the younger brother was nothing but a cheap plot device. And the whole prophecy thing where the prophecy is never actually explained? Total cop out. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

"Read the reviews on this one, Jordan, Martin, and Hobbs, be wary. A new Fantasy Master has finally released his long written wares.... Deemed one of the top 10 indie Fantasy releases of 2010 by Fantasy Book Critic, and listed in the first ever Publishers Weekly Indie Select issue, this 235k word epic title was originally written in longhand in a Texas prison cell by M. R. Mathias. The Sword and the Dragon When the Royal Wizard of Westland poisons the king so that his puppet prince can take the throne and start a continental war, a young squire is forced to run for his life carrying the powerful sword that his dying monarch burdened him with from the death bed. Two brothers find a magic ring and start on paths to becoming the most powerful sort of enemies, while an evil young sorceress unwillingly falls in love with one of them when he agrees to help her steal a dragon's egg for her father. Her father just happens to be the Royal Wizard, and despite his daughter's feelings, he would love nothing more than to sacrifice the boy! All of these characters, along with the Wolf King of Wildermont, the Lion Lord of Westland, and a magical hawk named Talon, are on a collision course toward Willa the Witch Queen's palace in the distant kingdom of Highwander. There the very bedrock is formed of the powerful magical substance called Wardstone. Who are the heroes? And will they get there before the Royal Wizard and his evil hordes do? Whatever happens, the journey will be spectacular, and the confrontation will be cataclysmic."-- Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |

That being said, this book sucked me in. I read the first chapter and couldn't put it down. Near the end though things got a little draggy and I was glad for the end [hence the 4 stars instead of 5]. If the author writes more in this direct series, I'll definitely be checking it out. Highly recommended ( )
