Dear Friend, from My Life I Write to You in Your Life von Yiyun Li (susanbooks)

My daughter recommended this author and this book was readily available in my library, so I tried it. It's and odd collection of pieces about a woman searching for identity and a relationship while zipping around the world. It was a change of pace for me, but not my favorite style. I appreciated the parts about Buddhist monasteries since I had visited one in western China with my son and his Chinese wife. I don't think I could really recommend this book to anyone, especially not my daughter, since there are numerous accounts of problems with airplanes coming close to crashes. ( )

I loved Cowboys are My Weakness, reading it senior year at Vassar with time on my hands to read for pleasure as graduation neared...sharing favorite snippets with a guy friend who also loved the book was such fun, laugh out loud reading.

I'm having the same joy with this book, thanks Pam for sharing your voice and your wanderlust. ( )

144 short tiny stories. I love Pam Houston but this book (novel?) just became too repetitive for me and I had to force myself to read. There are many stories that are succinct, beautiful moments, and there are others that beg for expansion, but overall it just didn't hold together for me. ( )

I've enjoyed Pam Houston's other books but this one left me distant and disappointed. The writing style is intentionally disjointed — told through distilled travel vignettes — and while I applaud her taking the risk to tell a story in a new way, I just needed a more consistent thread to keep me interested. A novel told in 144 vignettes, by an extremely talented writer. Each "chapter" starts with an airline flight and the protagonists wanderlust takes her from Alaska to Laos to California to Mexico to Thailand.

Captured in these moments is the story of a woman who longs to see the world, breaks up with a man she should have never loved in the first place, and builds strong friendships with people around her.

The language is beautiful and so carefully crafted -- it's an excellent read! ( )
