( ) "Music is good for your brain". And you're not too old to start playing. This is a great book on learning. I have to admit I'm positively biased in favour of everything about music (and here guitar) but this is a really nice and flowing read (except maybe for some parts like those about the music teachers - too long). It even makes me feel like re-starting once again trying to play guitar! This book was an excellent read but the title is misleading. While the author's goal was to learn music and that desire was the inspiration for this book, the subject is basically "This is your brain on music" instead of how to play guitar. While he addresses the guitar in his book, he also addresses how the mind and body process music as well as discussing music theory. This is more a psychology of music mixed with a bit of memoir. Still a good book though. Please read my review in my blog. https://polymathtobe.blogspot.com/2022/08/book-review-guitar-zero-by-gary-marcus...
“Anyone can pick up an instrument in the middle of his/her life and gain enough proficiency to enjoy playing favorite songs. Learning music is not limited to any class or race of people. Any and all are welcome to nurture their latent abilities and become good musicians. . . . Great musicians nurture the nature with which they were born —going from Guitar Zero to Guitar Hero.”
The author describes how he was able to learn to play the guitar in midlife in spite of a limited musical aptitude, revealing what he learned about the brain's capacity for musical proficiency at any time of life and how his findings challenge commonly accepted beliefs about musical talent and training.
