This beautifully illustrated children's book is a part of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library--a fantastic resource for getting books into the hands of children and spreading literacy and the love of reading! This is a heartwarming children's story written by Dolly Parton herself and is autobiographical. It is a tale from her childhood, when the family lived in poverty in rural Tennessee. Dolly's mother sewed her a coat made from colorful rag scraps and was filled with so much love and stories her mother told her as she sewed the coat. It was so beautiful in Dolly's eyes, and her heart was broken when she arrived at school and the children all made fun of her coat of rags. She could not make them understand what a beautiful coat it was, especially as it was full of so much love and stories. That heartbreak did not ease for her until many years later. This book comprises the lyrics of the song Dolly wrote about that incident and it is the most meaningful song to her that she ever wrote. What a wonderful, poignant, beautifully illustrated book to share with your child and read to them! ( )

This book's art reminded me of my childhood reading American Girl Doll books. The art was colored shapes put together, using perspective to create depth and paint a full picture. ( )

Dolly Parton's "Goodnight with Dolly" YouTube videos are so soothing and I think it's so cool when she sings! https://donate.imaginationlibrary.com/goodnight-with-dolly/

Coat of Many Colors is a sweet story and I love the cozy illustrations.

Coat of Many Colors is an endearing story of a young girl realizing what is important to her. Her mother makes a coat for her, since they are poor and she didn't have one, out of rags donated by someone. The coat is colorful and the girl loves it, since her mother made it and put her love in every stitch. When the girl gets to school she gets bullied because of the coat, but she does not let it get to her, she knows that there are more important things in life than money. This story shows that you can be rich through other means, not just money. The girl is rich in family and love, things more important than money. The only down side of the story is the illustration, as it is a little lifeless. Besides that Coat of Many Colors is a good story, with a fantastic message. ( )
