'The Pies beat the Saints and the city of Melbourne was still cloaked in black and white crepe paper when the rumour of a pack rape by celebrating footballers began to surface . . . And so, as police were confiscating bedsheets from a townhouse in South Melbourne, the trial by media began.' What does a young footballer do to cut loose? At night, some play what they think of as pranks, or games- night games with women. Sometimes these involve consensual sex, sometimes not, and often the lines are blurred. In Night Games, Anna Krien follows the rape trial of an Australian Rules footballer. She also takes a balanced and fearless look at the dark side of footy culture - the world of Sam Newman, Ricky Nixon, Matty Johns and the Cronulla Sharks. Both a courtroom drama and a riveting work of narrative journalism, this is a breakthrough book by one of the leading young lights of Australian writing. Night Gameswas shortlisted for the Walkley Book Award 2013 and the Adelaide Festival Award for Non-Fiction 2014. 'The work of a compassionate and expansive intelligence.'The Sydney Morning Herald… (mehr)

A ground breaking book which examines the 2012 rape trial of an AFL footballer. Neither the defendant, or the complainant in the trial, are named in the book. What is presented is a detailed and finely nuanced analysis of the trial itself, and the wider ethical, gender, and cultural issues at play. In the tradition of works like Helen Garner’s, The First Stone (1995), and Chloe Hooper’s, The Tall Man (2008).

Interesting and even handed analysis of a controversial sexual assault case in Melbourne involving footballers from a famous club, during celebrations of a Premiership victory.

Anna Krien looks at the 'boys will be boys' culture prevalent in modern sports, and how attitudes are slowly changing, though not without desperate resistance. How these cultural factors affect the concepts of consent and awareness thereof are forensically examined, both through the events played out in the courtroom and by reference to other notorious incidents.

In the end, neither victim nor alleged perpetrator see well served by the blunt instrument of the legal system.

This book is not just about sport. I can't help but think that if every parent read this book we would have a better chance that more men of future generations will be respectful, admirable adults instead of the "dick-whipped" man-children who have dominated sport and perpetuated bullying in all walks of life for so long.
Cannot recommend it highly enough. ( )

Compelling narrative non-fiction tracking the rape trial of a footballer, but exploring the intersection between sex, power, and football culture, and considering such issues as entitlement, the way society enables, and the need for ethical/moral behaviour.
