Despite its short length the characters were so well-formed and three dimensional that I loved spending time with them and could understand perfectly where they were coming from, even if they may be crossing a line in allowing their attraction to manifest, which is oh-so-human, I should think. Appetite whetted, I'm next going to tackle the author's longer form novels... which one, I wonder? This story had my full attention from the dramatic opening right through to the last sentence. I loved the characters. Despite this being a short story, I felt connected and drawn to them. Carmen DeSousa's writing feels effortless. She steps out of the way and allows her characters to tell their tale. I was excited to learn Detective Mark Waters' story will be continuing on. I'm looking forward to spending more time with him. Detective Mark Waters doesn’t believe the claim that The Depot is haunted. He’s eaten at the restaurant many times and never witnessed anything unusual.
So when he’s called there to investigate a suicide, it’s just another case. Or so he thinks.
The past meets the present and now Mark knows different.
Not a long story, but it has a lot of ghostly atmosphere. You go back in time, then forward to the present, as the story is revealed.
Tragedy, betrayal, and a thirst for revenge, this a good one for a dark and stormy night. ( )
