"A cartographic thriller with so many twists and turns it requires its own map A cartography-obsessed misfit clerk from an antique map store in a district that's not quite trendy yet. A bold young woman chasing the answer to a question she can't quite formulate. A petty criminal hoping the parking lot he's just purchased is the ticket to a new life of respectability with his school-age daughter. A ruthless but vulnerable killer and his disgruntled accomplice. In The City Under the Skin, it's not fate that will bind these characters together but something more concrete and sinister: the appearance of a group of mysterious women, their backs crudely and extensively tattooed with maps. They have been kidnapped, marked, and released, otherwise unharmed. When one turns up on the doorstep of the map shop and abruptly bares her back, only to be hustled away by a man in a beat-up blue Cadillac, it's the misfit clerk Zak, pushed by his curious new friend Marilyn, who finds himself reluctantly entering a criminal underworld whose existence he'd prefer to ignore. In this haunting literary thriller, Geoff Nicholson paints a deft portrait of a city in transition. His sharply drawn characters are people desperate to know where they are but scared of being truly seen. A meditation on obsession and revenge, a hymn to the joys of urban exploration, The City Under the Skin is a wholly original crime novel about the indelible scars we both live with and inflict on others"--… (mehr)

This book a novel about the backyard of an unnamed city, probably British which has seen better days. A number of women are abducted and had been tattooed with rough hewn maps. Zak is a map expert but with an intellectual withdrawn character. He develops a relationship with a girl friend, Marilyn, to investigate, and and we are pulled into the underworld not only of crime, but abandoned tunnels. There is a bit of horror with this book, but not enough for me to abandon the book. There is a mob king with two underlings, one who wants to inject morality and causation, but stops from going to far. Zak is a classic Enneagram 5, I didn't attempt to analyze the other characters. This was the literary equivalent of a straight-to-video crime thriller. I'd say if this were a movie it would be a cult-classic, with most people saying they watched it because it was "so bad it's good" but secretly liking it.

Not a bad book and generally an easy read which kept me interested. Still, I felt there was no character to root for as they were all pretty un-admirable, with the possible exception being the female lead who was admirable but very underdeveloped as a character.

The final reveal of the secret of the maps was fairly disappointing and I felt the dialog from the 12-year old character was unrealistically more sophisticated than most adults, no matter how "sassy and independent" she's supposed to be.

Three stars for keeping my interest without too many eye rolls but I don't think I'll be checking out any further books by this author. ( )

"Now when I was a little chap I had a passion for maps ... at that time there were many blank spaces on the earth, and when I saw one that looked particularly inviting on a map (but they all look that) I would put my finger on it and say, When I grow up I will go there."
