Richard Scrope, the Archbishop of York from 1398 was tried and executed in 1405 for his part in a rebellion against Henry IV. He quickly attained the status of a martyr, his tomb a popular site for pilgrimage in the north of England. This collection of essays offer a reconsideration of Scrope's career and legacy. They can be broadly divided into three themes: Scrope as a rebel - where it is argued that he was motivated more by family grievance than naivety; Scrope as Archbishop - he was by all accounts popular, capable and pious; and Scrope as martyr and saint where his influence in art and literature is assessed.
