Life isn't going terribly well for Derrick; he's become severely overweight, his only friend has turned on him, he's hopelessly in love with a girl way out of his league, and it's all because of his sister. Her depression, and its grip on his family, is tearing his life apart. When rumours start to circulate that a panther is roaming wild in his south London suburb, Derrick resolves to turn capture it. Surely if he can find a way to tame this beast, he'll be able to stop everything at home from spiraling towards disaster? Panther is a bold and emotionally powerful novel that deals candidly with the effects of depression on those who suffer from it, and those who suffer alongside them.… (mehr)

CW: suicide attempts and eventual suicide ( )

not sure what I think.

it was very hard to read, and not at all enjoyable, but that's not to say it wasn't a good book. it deals with a lot of tough subject matter, but I found it a bit simplistic.

very unsure about this book. I'll call it 'okay' I guess. 2*s.
edit: changed to 3*s. it's very well written and effective, even if it is horrible and nothing positive happens what so ever. ( )

Depression has overwhelmed young Charlotte and in this book we witness the struggles of her brother Derrick and their parents as they all live within its shadow.
I think the result is a real achievement, particularly for a first time novelist. The pain and bewilderment of each individual is finely portrayed without losing sight of the need to move the story along. Some reviewers have complained about ambiguity regarding the panther, but I rather think that's the point.
Not an easy read emotionally, it will make you think, as a good book should. ( )

I have to agree with a previous reviewer that this book is both beautiful and heart-breaking. From the first few pages, I believed in and really felt for Derrick – his question – “why I am doing this to myself” – while cramming more dry and disgusting cookies into his mouth brought to life some insights into a compulsive eater. His distress at being bullied at school, his longing to make more of his friendship with the girl of his dreams and desperate disappointment over the behaviour and desertion of his former best friend. All this is going on in his life – and in addition he feels that coping with his sister’s depression – perhaps defeating it – in the form of the panther on the prowl – will somehow provide a way out. . The quality of the writing is remarkable – although this is marketed as a book for young people, there are many adults out there, like myself, who will recognise how it was to feel that you are trying to cope with a world over which you have lost control. There is no sentimental all-consuming happy ending – but it is a much finer novel for that. I cared about Derrick and his family – and still do – long after finishing the novel.
