A young woman goes against her cultural expectations when she's accepted into a university in space. I loved her bravery, fear, intelligence, and ingenuity. When her ship is attacked by jellyfish-like creatures she is left to fend for herself. It's a beautiful story and reminded me a bit of the later Ender's Game series books. I can't wait to read the next one in the series. ( ) Wow, I really enjoyed reading this! It's a brief look into a sci-fi world that is inhabited by all kinds of races and beings, but still steeped in familiar issues. Binti is a really interesting character; I truly liked reading about her math mind and "treeing", and this is coming from someone who loathes math. I'm also a HUGE man of the Meduse- they're a cunning, intelligent, and squishy race that I just pictured as giant pastel jellyfish and it made my reading experience 100% better. The big downside of this book is what everyone seems to be saying: it's too short! I would have loved if this was even just 200 pages instead of its actual 90. The whole thing seemed almost like the sparse framework written up for a longer novel. I'm definitely going to continue this series, but I hope to see it bulked up a bit. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Her name is Binti, and she is the first of the Himba people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs. Knowledge comes at a cost, one that Binti is willing to pay, but her journey will not be easy. The world she seeks to enter has long warred with the Meduse, an alien race that has become the stuff of nightmares. Oomza University has wronged the Meduse, and Binti's stellar travel will bring her within their deadly reach. If Binti hopes to survive the legacy of a war not of her making, she will need both the gifts of her people and the wisdom enshrined within the University, itself--but first she has to make it there, alive.
