This is my second read of this book and I still love it just as much. This is definitely one of my all time favorite series and I can't wait to get to the final book. There are many surprising moments in this book and some heartbreaking, but so good.

Content warnings: there is an attempted rape scene later on in this book, and there are a couple of sex scenes later on as well. ( )

This book was a great follow-up to Lair of Dreams and continuation of The Diviners series, which has likely become my favorite fantasy (horror??) series. It is funny, romantic, brutal, and frightening in turns. And now I will leave you with how I described the book on Twitter: The Diviners is not only a bang-up urban fantasy slash horror series, but also a great period piece that lays bare America's fraught history. "This is a book about ghosts, for we live in a haunted house." ( )

The penultimate entry in the Diviners series. Shit got real in this book. There's tons of character development and the plot moves faster then it does in the previous books. It felt like there was less fluff, but it also felt like I was reading it forever. I'm looking forward to finishing this series. ( )

So far, this is my least favorite of the Diviners series, but there was enough I liked, especially in the last half, that I got sucked back in, and I’m on board for the next.
It worked better for me in print than on audio this time, even though January LaVoy does a nice job with all the voices. I think she might have captured Evie’s annoying personality a little too well. Boy, that character makes me want to punch walls.
Pacing was rather slow at the beginning, and all the cryptic, dire warnings the kids kept receiving got old. The book probably could have been shorter.
But there were some good surprises with the gang, and I found myself getting attached to them all over again—even that frustrating Evie —as I got reacquainted.
I’m not a fan of all the loose ends I was left with when I finished it, and I’m sad to see the last book isn’t listing a publication date yet. ( )
