Jayeless: Both books deal with the sinister, ultra-competitive side of teenagers striving to break into elite-level sports, along with the social politicking of the upper-middle class
"You can’t understand what it’s like until you see your child do something you could never do. No one could ever do."
The world of competitive gymnastics -- reaching the pinnacle where a spot on the Olympic team is just in sight. A dream come true, right? Or, maybe, a nightmare.
Megan Abbott creates for us a world of that typical suburban family with a not-at-all typical child. Since she was little Devon Knox has had the singular drive, determination, and focus, to make her a champion. The family has done everything to support her -- re-mortgaging the house, subordinating their own ambitions, and ignoring their other child, to make Dylan's dream come true. When tragedy strikes their gymnastics community, fingers will point, people will whisper, and no one will know who to trust.
I appreciated the tension in this book, and loved author's exploration of several themes (family sacrifice for one member's goals, female gymnast's body issues, etc.) but on the whole I wasn't enthralled. The "suspense" part of the book felt a little bit confusing, and the end was anti-climactic.

Run of the mill, predictable thriller about an elite gymnast and what her family will do to protect her and advance her career. I wasn't particularly impressed. ( )
It wasn't awful or anything but I just couldn't care about the characters or solving the crime. There wasn't a single character I could say I liked or related to and kind of wished they could all either die or be thrown in prison. Overall, one big meh. ( )

Go Devon! Knox Rox! Next Stop: Elite Qualifiers! BelStars 4-Ever! Regional Champs! The vinyl banners rippled from the air vent, the restaurant roiling with parents, the bobbing of gymnasts heads, music gushing from the weighty speakers keeled on the window ledges.
