Gather under the mistletoe for another round of caroling with the Quinn family in this heartwarming third addition to Elin Hilderbrand's bestselling Winter Street series.
Some of the stormy weather of the past few seasons seems to have finally lifted for the Quinns. After a year apart, and an ill-fated affair with the Winter Street Inn's old Santa Claus, Mitzi has returned to rule the roost; Patrick is about to be released from prison; Kevin has a successful new business and is finally ready to tie the knot with Isabelle; and best of all, there's hopeful news about Bart, who has been captured by enemy forces in Afghanistan.
That doesn't mean there aren't a few dark clouds on the horizon. Kelley has recently survived a health scare; Jennifer can't quite shake her addiction to the drugs she used as a crutch while Patrick was in jail; and Ava still can't decide between the two lovers that she's been juggling with limited success. However, if there's one holiday that brings the Quinn family together to give thanks for the good times, it's Christmas. And this year promises to be a celebration unlike any other as the Quinns prepare to host Kevin and Isabelle's wedding at the inn. But as the special day approaches, a historic once-in-a-century blizzard bears down on Nantucket, threatening to keep the Quinns away from the placeâ??and the peopleâ??they love most. Before the snow clears, the Quinns will have to survive enough upheavals to send anyone running for the spiked eggnog, in this touching novel that proves that when the holidays roll around, you can always go home again.

Before I get to this review, there's a couple of things I feel the need to say:

    1) I have nothing but the utmost respect for authors who put their works out into the world. It's incredibly hard work to "birth" a book, and then subject yourself to everyone's opinion.

    2) Elin Hilderbrand is a model of strength, grace, and perseverance. She faced cancer head-on, and from what she's shared publicly it seems she's on the winning side of that battle. She works hard to help others who are facing cancer, financially and in spirit.

The more I read, the more I feel I'm able to hone in on what sorts of books appeal to me, and which ones do not. While "Winter Storms" is getting good reviews from many other reviewers, I just find that these sorts of books no longer resonate with me. The story line seemed both dull and predictable. Problems were solved much too easily. Characters were inauthentic.

I know many readers who love this genre, and if that's the case I'd direct them to read other reviews of this book. However, if you're leery of "chick lit" I can't say I'd recommend this one.

Thank you to NetGalley and Little Brown & Company for a galley of this book in exchange for an honest review. ( )

I loved this story as much as I loved the first book in this series. I love that there were happy and sad parts in this story. You can feel some of the story lines coming to an end but it is okay because it looks like new ones are starting. Looking forward to reading Winter Solstice next to see what these characters get up to. ( )

I'm rating this series as an overall, because I am enjoying it. And I'm easily forgetting what is happening in each book. These are good, again, probably not earth shattering. I feel bad that Kelley is dying. And I think Ava dating two guys at the same time is completely bizarre on a tiny island. Especially when she was exclusive with one and now he's OK with her dating Nathaniel again? I guess because then he can date Roxanne. I don't know, the whole thing just seems a little bizarre to me. That she was exclusive with each of them in the past and now she's just dating both and can't make up her mind. I don't know, very weird to me! They also had someone with a "New England" accent. And since I was listening to the audiobook, they did an absolute terrible accent, so that had me chuckling. ( )

In this third book of Elin Hilderbrand’s Winter series, the Quinn family endures another year of dysfunction, heartbreak, romance, and living on Nantucket. Ava, who is still dating both Scott and Nathaniel and is torn between them, meets another man, Potter, a professor at Columbia University, and eventually takes a position teaching at an elite private school in Manhattan. Patrick is serving the last few months of his sentence for insider trading, while his wife, Jennifer, becomes more addicted to oxycodone to cope with the stress of Patrick’s imprisonment and her sons’ reaction to it. Kevin, the screw-up middle son, finally comes into his own when he opens a successful eatery at the beach and proposes to Isabel. And Bart, their half-brother, is still missing in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, patriarch Kelley reunites with Mitzi and survives radiation for prostate cancer; he is declared in remission, only to learn months later that the cancer has metastasized into his brain. Bart’s fate is finally resolved as the family prepares for Kevin and Isabel’s Christmas Eve wedding as a blizzard bears down on them. Once again, the story was engaging, if not somewhat predictable and exaggerated in parts. ( )

Winter Storms by Elin Hilderbrand is a 2016 Little, Brown and Company publication.

The blurb for this book says this is the last book in a trilogy- and it was meant to be- but this there is one more book after this one- FYI.

This book starts with a summer wedding and a feeling of hope. But there are still many dark clouds hovering over the Quinn Family…

Patrick is released, but discovers his strong wife is human after all when her secret drug use comes to his attention. Ava is still undecided about her love life; Kevin realizes he and Isabelle can’t put their lives on hold any longer and Kelley receives a serious health diagnosis. Meanwhile, the family still sits on pins and needles waiting for news about Bart…

This series is a little bit addictive. As per usual the story features high drama- with a bit more somberness in places, but there are a lot of fresh starts and promising futures, too!

Overall, this was another addicting installment in this holiday themed series!
