Fiction. Science Fiction. HTML:New York Times bestselling author Kim Stanley Robinson returns with a bold and brilliant vision of New York City in the next century.
As the sea levels rose, every street became a canal. Every skyscraper an island. For the residents of one apartment building in Madison Square, however, New York in the year 2140 is far from a drowned city.
There is the market trader, who finds opportunities where others find trouble. There is the detective, whose work will never disappear ?? along with the lawyers, of course.
There is the internet star, beloved by millions for her airship adventures, and the building's manager, quietly respected for his attention to detail. Then there are two boys who don't live there, but have no other home ?? and who are more important to its future than anyone might imagine.
Lastly there are the coders, temporary residents on the roof, whose disappearance triggers a sequence of events that threatens the existence of all ?? and even the long-hidden foundations on which the ci

Impressive in that the book world is realistic, a time frame that is a hundred or so years away is particularly difficult because of the complexity of factors that impact. The characters are lively and mostly well defined amd believable.

There is a lot to learn from this book but it does present some problems. There is a dogmatic presence of a body of culture ((Marx, Keynes, Melville, etc..) that has even faded in discourse today. The characters’ “new ideas” come down to this same sphere and this feels not only unrealistic but naive on part of the characters. The ideas of socialised banking are thrown around as if revolutionary but as a reader they do not feel new but rather part of contemporary left wing politics.

The chapters skip from character to character with a formulaic plot that involves an obstacle to overcome that leads to some sense that the character is developing. But onerall this development feels insubstantial, fleeting. And this may be the point the author is making - no happy ending as he describes at the end. I think for this to work smoothly the reader needs more preparation or it just feels like a lame ending.

When Kim Stanley Robinson is on target, he is one of the best SF writers working today. New York 2140 is definitely on target. But unlike many of his novels, there is a very strong streak of observation and opinion being conveyed here. Robinson believes our current course, economically, politically, and technologically is unsustainable. And he has prescriptions to offer. You may not agree with some (or any) of them. But they're worth reading and considering, because they will make you think about what we are doing and what we should be doing. And Robins carries this off with interesting characters and detailed research that are the hallmarks of his writing.
[Audiobook note: The audiobook version uses multiple readers. All are good. But my absolute favorite is the one who calls himself "Citizen" and reflects on the varied and fascinating history of New York city in a strong New York accent. I imagine I will listen to just the chapters he narrates for the sheer enjoyment and learning of it.] ( )

DNF very early. So boring I couldn’t imagine spending 23 of my precious hours continuing it. ( )

An excellent sci-fi book for nerdy readers, with lots of ecology and socioeconomic theory mixed in. ( )

I really wanted to like this book but I am good my to have to admit. I have not finished the last few Robinson books. I didn't finish this one.

„New York 2140“ ist, bei aller Freude an brillanten futurologischen Extrapolationen, ein sehr engagierter Roman über das Hier und Heute.

New York 2140 is a towering novel about a genuinely grave threat to civilisation.
