Fabulous piece of story-telling: great characters, wonderful local color, and a meaty, intriguing mystery which seems all-too plausible. Highly recommended! I'm delighted to report that The Bone Readers has been acquired by Little Brown. They are reissuing it AND publishing the sequel next year! https://www.thebookseller.com/news/little-brown-takes-ross-peepal-tree-816321 The writing is a joy and the dialect brings a lyric spoken word quality that just swings along. The plot carries the characters but the characters are at the heart of it. I was particularly interested how the first person narrative uses dialect for speaking and quite an english voice for reporting to the reader - with the two voices providing depth and variety. Many of us have grown up with multiple voices, whether it is school vs home or peer group vs family or friends vs work - and it's nice to see it used here.
As the novel progresses and he unpicks the complex web of relationships that spreads beneath the surface of this society, he discovers painful truths and some shocking surprises. Ross’s characters are always powerfully delineated through brilliant visual descriptions, dialogue that trips off the tongue, and keenly observed behaviour. Gehört zur ReiheCamaho Quartet (1)
WINNER OF THE JHALAK PRIZE 'The Bone Readers is a page-turner, but its insights and language are equally testament to a literary novel of impressive depth and acuity' Guardian Secrets can be buried, but bones can speak . . . After standing witness to a murder on the streets of the Caribbean island of Camaho, young Michael 'Digger' Digson is recruited into a unique plain clothes homicide squad, an eclectic group of semi-official police officers, led by the enigmatic DS Chilman. Digger becomes enmeshed in Chilman's obsession with a cold case, the disappearance of a young man. But Digger has a murder to pursue too: that of his mother, killed by a renegade police squad when he was a boy. He has two weapons at his disposal - his skill in forensics, and Chilman's latest recruit, the mysterious, observant Miss Stanislaus. Michael 'Digger' Digson is recruited by Detective Superintendent Chilman for a newly formed police force. Digger has his own agenda, however, as he wants to find out what happened to his mother. He is an illegitimate child and his biological father is the chief of police of the Caribbean island of Camaho.
It soon becomes clear that the women and girls on the island are oppressed and abused and that only a few of them fight back, but have to pay for it with their lives. The men always get away scot-free. Digger wants to take action against this, but it's not that easy. With the help of Chilman's daughter Miss Stanislaus, a secretary at the police station and DS Chilman's backing, he manages to solve the cases.
Very excitingly written with lots of insight knowledge about a world that is foreign to me. ( )
