Teenagers who play or watch sports will enjoy this book. The majority of it is a collection of poems and quotes by successful people (artists, leaders, coaches, and athletes) so it has the bonus of being a fairly quick read as well.

Personally, I've never been that into sports so it fell a little flat for me. Also the "rules" which were poems didn't always sound like rules and were missing the figurative language that often makes a collection of words poetic. After a while, the rules and quotes blurred together and I didn't feel any strong, clear take-aways. It's an attractive book with a lot of illustrations, pictures, and bold orange and black colors but it seemed to lack focus. (Ironic since that was one of the themes for a section of poems/quotes.)

Great for reluctant readers or adults looking for an inspirational read for a tween or teen. ( )

This nonfiction book starts with Kwame Alexander's own story in his athletics. He changes from sport to sport not knowing entirely who he is. From basketball to football to tennis, he finds his designated sport that makes him a high school champion! After that, the book is split up into four sections with an athlete representing each one (grit, motivation, focus, and teamwork). The book featured rules with pictures of players and inspirational quotes that the author refers to as "stretched poetry". Learn the strategy from within yourself. It is not always a physical game. Most of the time, it's mental. Teach yourself to win and motivate yourself to learn.

What a whiff of inspiration! The information in this book is straight facts. It helps you to be aware of not only your emotional game but others. It teaches you to help peers and work with peers. I appreciate this book very much because it gives you vital information that needs to be read by many. From adults to young teens. It gives you confidence when you need it and every rule is a valuable lesson. It gives you some sort of strength from within and sets off a fire you never thought you had. ( )

I really like Kwame Alexander's books because I like books that have short or long poems in them and most of his books are like that, but this is my favorite book because it has a bunch of really good poems and quotes from people and some of the poems are in the shape of curvy lines and I think that's pretty cool. I also like that it actually has 52 rules and then some famous basketball player's quote or just some famous persons quote usually a basketball player. The book is about Kwame Alexander's journey from playing tennis and football but then finally choosing basketball and thats what made him a high school champion.
I would recommend this book to people who also like poems in books and people who love to play basketball or people who just like Kwame Alexander's books. ( )

Although targeted for young athletic teens, this playbook is for anyone and everyone. It's inspirational to nth degree and kids, teens, and adults will enjoy the wonderful selection of quotes, poetry, and uplifting sports stories. Even though this is obviously geared towards sports, you could easily read this and apply any of the rules or advice and apply it towards any aspect of your life. This slim volume is motivational and perfect if you're in a slump and you need a boost. What a wonderful motivator! ( )
