For a children's informational book, I think this would be a good book to introduce the topic of seasons. It has great illustrations and has very simple text. I personally recommend this for kindergarten or first grade students. The main idea is to simply teach kids about snow and events that might occur when it snows, such as school closings or shutting down airports. Children love snow, so I feel that this would be a great book to read. One thing I did like about this book was the text and writing skill that the author used. Except for the first page, every line of the story begins with the word snow. I think this is a good technique because it is repetitive, therefore easy to remember. Another thing I think is good about this book is that the author added "fun facts" to every other page. Examples of this include "A big, windy snowstorm is called a blizzard" or "Plants and animals get water from melting snow". These fun facts are placed in a circle overtop of the image that shows the fun fact. I like this technique because it gives additional details to the minimal text used. On page 10, the text simply reads "Snow covers plants." However, the author added a fun fact that reads "snow is like a warm blanket for plants". I just like that this fun fact directly connects to the text on that page. Another thing I liked about this book was the picture usage. This is a scholastic book, therefore the pictures were not illustrated, but photographs. The photographs are from all over the world, including cityscapes, airports, and even of a school. A few of the pictures even include children playing. I feel that these photographs can directly relate to young children, especially seeing all kids love snow! "Snow closes schools."
