Alice Hoffman's enchanting witch's brew of suspense, romance and magic -- now a major motion picture from Warner Bros. When the beautiful and precocious sisters Sally and Gillian Owens are orphaned at a young age, they are taken to a small Massachusetts town to be raised by their eccentric aunts, who happen to dwell in the darkest, eeriest house in town. As they become more aware of their aunts' mysterious and sometimes frightening powers -- and as their own powers begin to surface -- the sisters grow determined to escape their strange upbringing by blending into "normal" society. But both find that they cannot elude their magic-filled past. And when trouble strikes -- in the form of a menacing backyard ghost -- the sisters must not only reunite three generations of Owens women but embrace their magic as a gift -- and their key to a future of love and passion. Funny, haunting, and shamelessly romantic, Practical Magic is bewitching entertainment -- Alice Hoffman at her spectacular best.… (mehr)

A family of siblings with unusual gifts grow up and their gifts help and hurt them. Not my style of subject, but Hoffman is a good writer. ( )

Note: The movie is a mere skim off the top of this book, with a heaping tablespoon of whimsy, and a hefty dose of Hollywood glopped on towards the end. You'll recognize things from the movie in this book - but they're really not the same animal. I enjoyed both. I liked this book, I'm glad I read it, but I did not love it enough to relegate it to the shelf of things I cherish and reread over and over again. 3 1/2 stars. ( )

Did not finish; too silly & going nowhere. ( )

I was really excited to read this book because this is one of my favorite movies. Unfortunately this was one of those rare instances where the movie was actually better than the book. I found that there really wasn't anything in the book that wasn't covered in the movie, and the things that were different seemed better in the movie.
I had a hard time with the way the author described the men falling in love with these women so easily, it just seemed kind of add the way people were falling all over them at times.
Overall, the story isn't bad, it's just not worth reading if you've already seen the film. ( )

Sally and Gillian were taken in by their aunts when they were small after the deaths of their parents. The Owens women have always been considered witches by everyone around them. They use black soap to wash with and have a garden that produces year-round.
Sally and Gillian are like night and day from each other. Sally is the one who works and cooks and cleans, while Gillian plays and makes fun of Sally.
They grow up and have very different lives from each other. Gillian has been away for a very long time and suddenly calls her sister and needs her help with something. They go through some major changes and become real women.
Love puts them in very different arenas. ( )

If there is an author north of the border who has managed to successfully translate the language of magic realism into the American idiom, it is Alice Hoffman.

Indeed, the title of Ms. Hoffman's latest novel, "Practical Magic," says it all: if you are going to believe in magic, it had better have palpable and easily comprehensible results.
