This is book for any artist who has ever wanted to capture the speed and precision of athletic competition, the strength of a predatory animal, or the splendor of a bird in flight. It is also a book for anyone who has ever wanted to convey, through painting, the wildness of a raging wind or the relentlessness of colliding waves. It is hard to imagine anything more elusive than capturing motion in watercolor, and until noew no book has adequately described specific techniques that enable you to depict this difficult subject matter in what is probably the most difficult of all media to control. This to-the-point text, supplemented by more than 300 illustrations, clearly explains and demonstrates the process of painting motion. Following an introduction to drawing, which is critically important to the accurate depiction of moving subjects, Douglas Lew demonstrates those watercolor techniques he considers essential. Notable among these techniques is calligraphy. Trained in this discipline from early childhood, Lew shows how expressive brushwork can convey a sense of motion. The vitality of his brushwork can be seen in a leaping jumble of basketball players, and it is equally apparent in such seemingly inanimate subjects as a rocky sea cliff. Afteer demonstrating a variety of techniques, the author explains how to use thumbnail sketches to work out overall color and compositional problems. Then, through a series of step-by-step demonstrations, he shows exactly how to lend a sense of motion to subjects as diverse as racing horses, playing children, a flock of birds, a golfer's swing, and a sailing race. Finally, to indicate how to put all this information together, Lew presents forty finished paintings, along with compositional and color sketches. This is a book that fine artists and illustrators will savor. Lew's painting and teaching are superb. - Dust jacket.… (mehr)
