Fiction. Western. Thriller. Historical Fiction. HTML:JOHNSTONE COUNTRY. WHERE IT'S NEVER QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT.

Springfield Model 1880. Trapdoor rifle with bayonet. Vengeance optional.

With a handful of murderous rogues, Captain Jed Foster has run off with four wagons containing new Springfield rifles, bayonets, and ammunition meant to resupply the troops at Fort Bowie in Arizona Territory. Foster plans to sell the weapons to the highest bidderâ??whether it's Apaches, Mexican revolutionaries, or Confederate veterans who still dream of destroying the Union. But that's the least of Foster's problems . . .
His junior officer, Lieutenant Grat Holden, is coming after him. With the help of an ornery ex-sergeant known as "Hard Rock" Masterson and fiery guerilla fighter Soledad, the young lieutenant will face off with war chiefs, banditos, and cutthroat outlaws. That's just for starters. Then he's got to take down a man who has enough guns for a small army . . .

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
What an exciting read that is filled with action, danger, an engaging plot and more! Books like this remind me that the way guns were produced back then weren’t always reliable, and men sometimes sold them to nefarious parties for profit! Springfield 1880 is a tale that makes your heart pound when a small detachment is sent to retrieve the latest Springfield model and bring them along with the ammunition back to the fort.
The task is filled with danger but when it comes to the detachment led by Lt. Grat Holden, it is the thief who comes to take them that really grates on Grat. Now Grat has to defend himself against false accusations, be willing to go where the Army can’t legitimately send him to retrieve the rifles and take along a partner he despises. What a thrilling ride this whole story was for me!
The adversaries of Lt. Grat Holden are many with his commanding officer hopes to save his own reputation and career after the rifles are stolen. Yet, at whose expense? Now Grat also has along with him on this expedition a well-known scout who is a mystery in many ways to Grat. The woman, Soledad, in the town where the major action takes place is one tough cookie! Soledad’s past is revealed later in the book which was helpful in shedding light on her previous thoughts, words and actions.
Here is a great book to get lost in for hours! You might find yourself sharing with friends and family or letting them know where to get the book, so they can read it and share with their friends too. Springfield 1880 is a Johnstone classic tale!
