Art. Nonfiction. HTML:

A stunning and timely creative call-to-arms combining four extraordinary written pieces by Neil Gaiman.
"The world always seems brighter when you've just made something that wasn't there before."â??Neil Gaiman

Drawn from Gaiman's trove of published speeches, poems, and creative manifestos, Art Matters is an embodiment of this remarkable multi-media artist's visionâ??an exploration of how reading, imagining, and creating can transform the world and our lives.

Art Matters bring together four of Gaiman's most beloved writings on creativity and artistry:

  • "Make Good Art," his famous 2012 commencement address delivered at the Philadelphia University of the Arts
  • "Making a Chair," a poem about the joys of creating something, even when words won't come
  • "On Libraries," an impassioned argument for libraries that illuminates their importance to our future and celebrates how they foster readers and daydreamers.

Art Matters is a stirring testament to the freedom of ideas that inspires us to make art in the face of adversity, and dares us to choose to be bold… (mehr)

This little illustrated collection of essays is lovely and simple and brilliant. It’s short and is far worth the very brief investment of time it takes to read. And its messages are universal: Value reading. Make good art. Art matters. ( )

Illustrations were great, and I have found a new artist to explore. But text is fairly anodyne. ( )

This charming little but heartfelt propaganda for making good art is wonderful. The art work accompanied by the brilliant words of Neil Gaiman is truly inspirational. It's a very quick read. Highly recommend it. ( )

Fun little thing. Looks good on the shelf after spending the few minutes to actually read it. The illustrations are - some, not all - quite funny. ( )

The final chapter "Make Good Art" is the one that resonated with me.

"So be wise. Because the world needs more wisdom. And if you cannot be wise, pretend to be someone who is wise, and then behave just like they would." ( )

I love the way words and pictures work together on a page.
I believe that it is difficult to kill an idea because ideas are invisible and contagious, and they move fast.

Albert Einstein was once asked how we could make our children intelligent.

'If you want your children to be intelligent', he said, 'read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.'
