"You're riding in your self-driving car when suddenly the doors lock, the route changes and you have lost all control. Then, a mysterious voice tells you, "You are going to die". Just as self-driving cars become the trusted, safer norm, eight people find themselves in this terrifying situation, including a faded TV star, a pregnant young woman, an abused wife fleeing her husband, an illegal immigrant, a husband and wife, and a suicidal man. From cameras hidden in their cars, their panic is broadcast to millions of people around the world. But the public will show their true colors when they are asked, "Which of these people should we save?...And who should we kill first?""--… (mehr)

In the beginning I was tempted to toss this book aside a couple of times since it appeared to be just another smarmy polemic against big bad government and big bad corporations. But then the underlying satire began to show itself, casting a jaundiced eye on everything from faux celebrities and the court of public opinion to misinformation, disinformation, conspiracy paranoia, and the howling mob we call social media. And that's when I realized that the author had in fact taken ME for a ride...damn him! A highly readable and ultimately satisfying thriller with a quadruple twist at the end that left me smiling even as I rolled my eyes. ( )

*pitches Kindle into the fire* Did the Daily Mail write this tosh? I was getting dizzy from leaping between so many soapboxes. And if the driverless cars had actually ganged together to kill not only the flimsy characters but also the whole of humanity, I would have been cheering them on, but instead of the twist I was actually hoping for (‘Car, do as I fucking tell you!’ he yelled in frustration. After a pause, the OS responded. ‘No'), the 'plot' is just another 'pick me, Hollywood!' there's-a-bomb-on-the-bus disgruntled loser pitting technology against social media. And dear lord in heaven, pregnancy and motherhood are not superpowers; if I had taken a shot for every variation of 'but she's having a baaaaaaby' or 'but they have children', I would need a new liver.

Finally, on a nitpicking note, it's fertile imagination, not furtive. ( )

Fantastic read that took me a bit to decide I’d try. The opening chapter pulled me in immediately. It remained highly suspenseful. When smart technology is so heavily relied upon it makes one think! ( )

I listened to the audio and then just had to own this book! I loved every second of it and can't wait to physically read a copy. I also got a personalized signed copy from John Marrs and that's super exciting! Amazing book, great twists and turns. I was literally gasping at moments. I couldn't recommend this book or this author highly enough!

Original review: This book is so good. I was sucked in. I listened to the audiobook book and was concerned that I would have a hard time following characters, but nope! I absolutely loved the references to "The One" I actually want to physically own this book I enjoyed it so much so it's on my wishlist now. I want to read it again. And I feel like this book could absolutely have a sequel. I'm here for it if Mr. Marrs decides to go that route...and I hope he does! ( )

I have never read a book with so many twists and turns! (I recommend reading "The One" before this book.) ( )

Buchbeschreibung

Denn Laura will niemandem Mut zusprechen.
