The Black Pennell Press ... continues to offer the discerning reader and collector books which are original and unusual in their editorial policy, and beautiful in their production. The Howdy & The Upgetting are two dialect stories by Bewick, here republished for the first time since Bewick saw them into print in a limited edition in 1850. The book contains wood engravings by the master, and a frontispeace by his best pupil, John Jackson, and is hand-set in Caslon, perhaps the most appropriate face for a work of this kind and date. The two stories are told in an almost impenetrable Tyneside dialect which, nevertheless, gives modern readers the authentic voice of Bewick himself, who was entirely at home both in received English and in dialect. Mr Rae has bound the book in rust-brown into which is attractively set an oval cream panel printed with one of the engravings from the text, whilst the spine is printed in italic in dark brown.
