"No series since George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire has quite captured both palace intrigue and the way that tribal infighting and war hurt the vulnerable the most." â??Paste Magazine

The final chapter in the bestselling, critically acclaimed Daevabad Trilogy, in which a con-woman and an idealistic djinn prince join forces to save a magical kingdom from a devastating civil war.

Daevabad has fallen.

After a brutal conquest stripped the city of its magic, Nahid leader Banu Manizheh and her resurrected commander, Dara, must try to repair their fraying alliance and stabilize a fractious, warring people.

But the bloodletting and loss of his beloved Nahri have unleashed the worst demons of Dara's dark past. To vanquish them, he must face some ugly truths about his history and put himself at the mercy of those he once considered enemies.

Having narrowly escaped their murderous families and Daevabad's deadly politics, Nahri and Ali, now safe in Cairo, face difficult choices of their own. While Nahri finds peace in the old rhythms and familiar comforts of her human home, she is haunted by the knowledge that the loved ones she left behind and the people who considered her a savior are at the mercy of a new tyrant. Ali, too, cannot help but look back, and is determined to return to rescue his city and the family that remains. Seeking support in his mother's homeland, he discovers that his connection to the marid goes far deeper than expected and threatens not only his relationship with Nahri, but his very faith.

As peace grows more elusive and old players return, Nahri, Ali, and Dara come to understand that in order to remake the world, they may need to fight those they once loved . . . and take a stand for those they once hurt.… (mehr)

A deeply satisfying conclusion to the epic trilogy. The heroes get the chance to make interesting, important choices, and so the "happy ending," while happy, is also complex and believable. Truly one of my favorite recent series. ( )

I loved this trilogy. I found myself captivated from the start of the first book. That said, this book was a harder read for me. I love the characters and it was difficult to see them face so many horrible situations in this book. I got to the point where I could see what was coming and just didn't want to read through their trials. I kept hoping they'd catch a break. While not exactly what I would classify as a happy ending, this book gave the trilogy a fitting ending. I'd like to have a peek at their lives a few years down the line, but this leaves you to imagine how everyone's life played out. I would definitely read more books by this author. ( )

Very slow to get back into and to remember the characters and world from the previous books, but picked up nicely after that ( )

This was a bittersweet book to finish - I don't want the tale of Nahri and Ali and Dara to end! Thank you, S.A. Chakraborty, for crafting such a spellbinding world. Cannot wait to read what you create next! ( )

I find myself a bit disappointed in this final installment of an otherwise wildly enjoyable trilogy. It kind of felt like Chakraborty realized that she'd done a lot of world/character/plot building in the first two novels and decided to just jump off the deep end with all her big, magical possibilities. The result left me scratching my head and wondering how a final book can be such a departure from its predecessors.

Was it still enjoyable? Yes, for the most part, because I fell in love with the characters in the first two books. But we see little of that charm in this one, just magical mayhem that comes out of nowhere and smacks me in the face like a frying pan.

If you've made it this far, you'll finish the series, I'm sure. I'd love to know your thoughts. ( )
