A pain of robins builds a nest and raises their young. Beautifully illustrated with pen and ink drawings with pops of robin's egg blue.

The pop of blue on the cover - more turquoise than robin's egg - continues inside, but no other colors emerge to complement it. This isn't a flaw, but I expected more color somewhere - the robins' red breast, perhaps, or the trees' spring buds. The line drawings are beautifully detailed, though.

This is really a non-fiction picture book. Robins make nests to raise their young is the simple premise. The illustrations and words make this perfect for the very young observer of birds. The illustrations are black and white with some blue for the sky and the robin's eggs. A double-page spread, illustrating the bird parents repetitively back and forth to the nest with food, is excellent. Author's note at the end gives further information for the curious reader. ( )
