This investment guide was a reach for me as I am a novice investor and very risk adverse. However, the book is well written and full of information that is helpful in understanding both the psychological and technical aspects of investments. I will be keeping this for future reference, and hope to be a smarter investor, if not a trader.

Athough billed as a Quickstart guide there are a lot abstruse concepts in this guide by Troy Noonan which will require some effort on the reader’s part to understand. The section on charts is particularly dense (not helped in the epub edition by poor quality reproduction of the actual charts themselves). I feel a longer, simple step by step guide to this vital aspect of trading wouldn’t have come amiss. Some pruning of Noonan’s more repetitive screeds, peculiar metaphors (the Forest, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly) and pointless examples of unlikely trader types could have resulted in more space for some genuinely useful text.

On the plus side, Noonan is admirably clear about what day trading is, its purpose, and the disciplined mind set required. From the outset he makes it plain that it’s not a quick rich scheme. It requires planning, patience, and a lot of work before you can even start to think about making money. Noonan’s approach strikes me as a practical and level headed one and I would be tempted to try the methods and strategies he advocates. This would be after closely re-reading the book and making use of the various accompanying digital assets – online spreadsheets and other tools linked to at various pages in the epub edition. ( )

A quick and pretty comprehensive review of day trading for a beginner who is unfamiliar with the actual mechanics and strategies. More appropriately used as a reference since actual simulated trading and training is recommended before committing more resources, i.e., time, money and effort. Of course, this guide is intended for equities and not commodities or FOREX. ( )

This book is pitched at day trading, and is biased towards futures trading and, the US market. However, this should not deter traders interested in trading with a different time frame, and trading other instruments such as stocks and options, in markets other than the US. The book provides fundamental lessons and guidance that may be applied by most traders regardless of their particular interest.

In summary the book covers the reasons for trading and how to develop and back-test a trading plan. The author believes that having a strong foundation is important and this is only acquired by thorough back testing of the plan before you risk your trade account. The author drives home the fact that that successful trading is a statistical game and that losing trades cannot be divorced from winning trades, so the trader needs an edge that accumulates more wins than loses over the long term and this edge is the tested trade plan and traders strategy and beliefs. There is a section on technical trading including detail on strategies for setting entries, exits and stops – the level of information here is quite good. There is a review of the common indicators, what they are and how they are used – suitable for the novice. The book does not go into technical trading in any depth but more about the trade plan and strategy.

I found the authors' approach to trading different, in a good way, from what I have found in other trading books over the years. The pace seems to drag a little in the latter half of the book. Also there is some repetition on key points, (typical with trading books), but then it is important to drive these home. I read the book on my Kindle Paperwhite, but really I think the printed version is the only way to go as there are many graphs and charts that the printed page does so much better.
To summarize the author has put all the important information on trading goals, plan and strategy with along with key technical indicators into one package. I think it is a good addition to the trader’s library and if you can put it into practice then even better for you.

The publisher also provides digital assets on their website for the reader. There is quite a lot of material although I have not completed a review of all it from what I have seen so far it is good quality and I think most traders would find it useful. There are a number of excel spreadsheets that include instructions and examples, pdfs with a summary of the important points, an audiobook companion with graphics and overview of each chapter, videos that cover key points and provide additional 'how-to' information to accompany the spreadsheets.
