Instant New York Times bestseller!

The MOMENTOUS debut of a groundbreaking Fairy Tale series â?? a brilliantly crafted, hilarious twist on this beloved classic, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, from renowned, award-winning, and New York Times bestselling duo and picture book pioneers Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen!

Once there was a bridge and a terrible and VERY hungry troll lived underneath it. When the three Billy Goats Gruff decide to clip-clop across the bridge to get to the grassy ridge, the troll is already imagining all the way to prepare a delicious goat dinner. But the troll underestimates those seemingly sweet but oh-so-savvy goats! This is the first in a groundbreaking new collection of fractured fairy tales crafted by one of today's most celebrated and acclaimed authors, Mac Barnett, and brought to stunning visual life by award-winning and beloved creator of I Want My Hat Back, Jon Klassen.

Told with pitch perfect timing and pacing, hilarious detail, and Barnett's signature narrator voice, this is Billy Goats Gruff as never before. High-stakes page turns will have readers on the edge of their seats and giggling along, as they join each goat and anticipate the arrival of the hungry and terrible troll living under the bridge. With Klassen's brilliantly restrained scenes, arresting characters, and celebrated artistic style, this first of three fairy tales is destined to be a true publishing event!

With a multitude of Caldecott Medals, Honors, international awards, and New York Times bestsellers to their names both independently and in collaboration, this is a creative pairing that is electric. So get ready to experience picture book magic... all you have to do is cross the bridge!… (mehr)

I read this story to a Kindergarten class I was subbing for, and the kids absolutely loved it. The story is about three billy goats who want to cross a bridge to graze in a pasture, but there's a nasty troll blocking their way. The first goat tells the troll that the second goat is more meaty and delicious, and the second goat tells the troll the same thing about the third goat. The third goat, who is the meatiest of them all, defeats the troll, and the goats go about their day grazing. When reading to the class, the kids were encouraged to make goat noises and to have fun with the story. We also discussed the idea of "greed." Specifically, how the troll kept waiting for something "bigger and better" to come along, and how it's not always good to want more. ( )

Thanksgiving weekend family picture book read-aloud fun! (Book 8 of 13.)

A retelling of the classic Norwegian fairy tale does away with the gore but soaks the story in an eerie atmosphere and offers up its own comically ghoulish ending. ( )

This adaptation of the traditional tale by Mac Barnett and illustrated by Jon Klassen is refreshing. The mood of the illustrations, as expected by a Klassen book, is darker than most adaptations of this story. Barnett also took some liberty in adding disgusting troll details, such as eating ear wax and belly button goo. These details are sure to disgust and elicit giggles from students.
Barnett's adaptation follows the plot of the traditional tale until the third goat comes across the bridge. In Barnett's version, the third goat to cross the bridge is much larger than the troll and bucks him down a waterfall. The three goats end the book happily grazing in the meadow.
