Fiction. Mystery. Thriller. HTML:

In New York Times bestselling author Anthony Horowitz's ingenious fourth literary whodunit following The Word is Murder, The Sentence is Death, and A Line to Kill, Horowitz becomes the prime suspect in a murder investigationâ??and only one man can prove his innocence: his newly estranged partner in solving crime, Detective Hawthorne.

"I'm sorry but the answer's no." Reluctant author, Anthony Horowitz, has had enough. He tells ex-detective Daniel Hawthorne that after three books he's splitting and their deal is over.

The truth is that Anthony has other things on his mind.

His new play, a thriller called Mindgame, is about to open at the Vaudeville Theater in London's West End. Not surprisingly, Hawthorne declines a ticket to the opening night.

The play is panned by the critics. In particular, Sunday Times critic Margaret Throsby gives it a savage review, focusing particularly on the writing. The next day, Throsby is stabbed in the heart with an ornamental dagger which turns out to belong to Anthony, and has his fingerprints all over it.

Anthony is arrested by an old enemy . . . Detective Inspector Cara Grunshaw. She still carries a grudge from her failure to solve the case described in the second Hawthorne adventure, The Sentence is Death, and blames Anthony. Now she's out for revenge.

Thrown into prison and fearing for both his personal future and his writing career, Anthony is the prime suspect in Throsby's murder and when a second theatre critic is found to have died in mysterious circumstances, the net closes in. Ever more desperate, he realizes that only one man can help him.

But will Hawthorne take the call?… (mehr)

My favorite out of the Hawthorne & Horowitz mystery series so far. Horowitz has completed the last installment in the three‑book contract he made with his fictional character Hawthorne and, as far as he’s concerned, their deal is over. Yet here we are in book #4. If you’ve been reading these you already know to expect a Holmes & Watson styled bromance and some serious Agatha Christie‑ish vibes. And if you haven’t, I don’t see any problem with starting here. I enjoyed it but it seemed like something I had seen on tv a few times. Writer of a pllay is involved in the murder of theatre critic and teams up with a detective friend (who is the inspiration for a book series) to clear him of the murder. He tags along with his P.I. friend while he's questioning all the suspects. ( )

Daniel Hawthorne wins the Hercule Poirot award for his excellent analysis of the murder of literary critic, Harriet Throsby, and his saving his ex-partner, Anthony Horowitz, from prison. The final scene where Hawthorne assembles all the suspects and reveals the details of Harriet’s murder, plus the murder of two other individuals. The scene reminds one of Hercule Poirot and/or Nick Charles of The Thin Man fame. The Twist of a Knife provides a fast-paced mystery with a vast array of suspects, and Horowitz embellishes the story with the interior of the theatre and the workings of an actual play. The tension builds as a recently released from jail, Anthony Horowitz, must employ the services of his friend, Daniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne and Horowitz travel here and there to undercover the murderer, no sitting in a chair and thinking like Poirot for these two men. An interesting study on how the past decides the present. Horowitz's lovable-unlovable detective Hawthorne is an ingenious invention. The same may be said of the self-centred narrator. Utterly enjoyable read. ( )

Another great mystery with the twist being our author is accused of murder this time. I do enjoy these mysteries, I just don't quite love the tone of the relationship between detective and author. It's quite manipulative and not as good-natured as I'd like. ( )
