NATIONAL BESTSELLER * A curmudgeonly professor journeys to a small town in the far north to study faerie folklore and discovers dark fae magic, friendship, and love in the start of a heartwarming and enchanting new fantasy series. "So endlessly enchanting, so rich and complete and wise that you'll walk away half ensorcelled."--Melissa Albert, author of The Hazel Wood Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world's first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party--or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people. So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk. Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, muddle Emily's research, and utterly confound and frustrate her. But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones--the most elusive of all faeries--lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she'll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all--her own heart.… (mehr)

I found it very slow to read, but interesting. It's like reading a research report with footnotes and that's probably why it's written that way...both main characters are academicians. ( )

February 2023: This was an interesting and mostly fun read. The small bit of romance in it, however, was confusing and felt unnecessary to me.

January 2024: thought I didn’t just love this the first time I read it, but a year later I still find myself thinking about it often. I do love the world the author created and I’m excited to reread this and dig into the next book in the series as well. ( )

I couldn't help but be charmed by this tale. Emily Wilde is a curmudgeonly academic on a research expedition to study the faeries of an isolated, northern European island and is none too pleased when her scholarly rival shows up "to help". Emily, for all of her expertise and determined independence, can't seem to keep herself from getting tangled in fairy enchantments which require the assistance of the one person she'd really rather not ask. Overall, I enjoyed this light story with its hints of romance and will definitely be reading the sequel. ( )

This was one of the best books of 2023, and now I understand why. I also enjoyed this book a lot. I was immediately captivated by the descriptive writing, and I loved the fact that it was written in a journal format. My favorite character was definitely Wendell, but I also loved Emily too. I love the banter and romance between them. The plot of the book keeps you interested, and I really loved the all the fae information and stories. The author does a great job at using the footnotes to enhance the story, however, you don’t have to read them to understand the story, so if you don’t like footnotes, you can ignore them. I’m excited to see what kind of adventures the next book takes our two characters on. ( )

This book was exactly the slow burn I needed. I can't begin to talk about how many times I laughed out loud or put my hand over my heart because Fawcett wrote something I've thought for a long time. All of the reveals are wonderful, and the prose is gorgeous. I didn't know I needed a novel that was both dark and lovely at the same time. Can't wait for the sequel. ( )
