Long ago, the Black Queen once ruled Zagreb in a looming fortress over the city. Her legend lives on in children's games and bedtime stories. Is it truly only folklore? And what harm is death to a queen who supposedly stole secrets from the stars? When rumors surface that the Black Queen might still be alive and living in a haunted chasm beneath Zagreb's Bear Mountain, it prompts the Star Council to dispatch star daimon Leo Solar to Earth to investigate. After witnessing a bizarre event at a local music gig, former philosophy student Dario Taubek begins to notice a strange-looking man in a star suit. Curious, he follows him and what he discovers catapults him into a world he never knew existed. A world of magical trams, myths and monsters, celestial beings, and the legendary Black Queen.… (mehr)

I received this book as part of the Early Reviewers program. Leo Solar is a star daimon who has been sent to earth to stop the return of Barbara, the Black Queen. Set in Zagreb, Croatia, the story had a lot of promise. Unfortunately, it just didn't pan out. Leo's distain for earth made him unlikeable. There were so many characters, that they just weren't properly fleshed out and I just didn't care about any of them. The author tried too hard to be whimsical, which just made many of the descriptions unbearable. Maybe something got lost in translation? I really wanted to like it, but ultimately, I can't recommend it. ( )

Well-written, entertaining, somewhat zany story set in Zagreb. My only criticism would be the large cast of characters is sometimes distracting and switching between them often jarring. Overall, the star of the show is the amusing writing style. ( )

This book is a very ambitious debut with a lot of promise. The author has a grand vision of her setting and a tapestry of characters to fill it. While the language flows well and the book is easy to follow, the amount of material and plot jumps between characters/locations can be a bit overwhelming. At times, it feels like too much is being attempted. I would still follow this author's career as they solidify their pacing and plot structures a bit more as the creativity is worth it. ( )

I won this book as an early reviewer. It was okay--I found the language difficult to read and the story hard to follow. I skimmed some of it. I think it was an okay premise but not the best execution.

The story set in another than the usual suspects city of Zagreb - possibility of country specific quirks and all - is easy to read, with a multitude of characters and storytelling patterns, is for me a solid 3/5 debut. I would hope she either writes shorter stories, or a bigger universe.
