Although the formation of groups and associations among Indian people in Britain is often seen as the product of postwar labour migration to this country, Indians have in fact been visiting and living in Britain from the eighteenth century onwards, and when movements for Indian independence arose in the nineteenth century, Indians here had a very important contribution to make.
