A quick and easy read, written in duel timelines (19th and 20th Century) with the story of each protagonist enfolding in alternating chapters. This has been chosen for Bookclub discussion next month. I enjoyed reading about Johanna Bonger who was responsible for introducing Vincent Van Gogh’s art to the world. ( ) A story within a story based on Van Gogh’s sister in law who inherited his paintings and a contemporary Hollywood auctioneer. Well researched and written, I enjoyed learning the story of how Van Gogh’s paintings were discovered. The present day story did not grab my attention as much but I think there would be much for discussion. Paperback.404 pp. Luba This book had me until the last quarter. Yes, the story of Johanna Van Gogh and her determination to champion Vincent’s works was inspiring and informative. However, the modern day tale was a bit far fetched and the number of coincidences was not believable. Perhaps had that story line been more realistic, I too could have given this book 5 stars. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Michele Cox When Hollywood auctioneer Emsley Wilson finds her famous grandmother's diary while cleaning out her New York brownstone, the pages are full of surprises. The first surprise is, the diary isn't her grandmother's. It belongs to Johanna Bonger, Vincent van Gogh's sister-in-law. Johanna inherited Vincent van Gogh's paintings. They were all she had, and they weren't worth anything. She was a 28 year old widow with a baby in the 1800s, without any means of supporting herself, living in Paris where she barely spoke the language. Yet she managed to introduce Vincent's legacy to the world. The inspiration couldn't come at a better time for Emsley. With her business failing, an unexpected love turning up in her life, and family secrets unraveling, can she find answers in the past? "This book was so much more than I had expected, and I had high expectations... one of the most beautiful stories I've read in years." Kaela Stokes .Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
