Inspired by the poor living conditions of Russian emigrants in the United States the authornbsp;observed during the World’s Fair: Columbian Exposition of 1893, this story follows two Ukrainian peasants who endure hardships while trying to settle in a new land. Letters from a friend who immigrated to the United States encourage Ivan and Matvei to abandon their difficult lives in a small Ukrainian village. After a long, uncomfortable trip, they arrive in New York and find themselves in a Russian Jewish neighborhood. Ivan easily picks up English and adapts quickly, but kindhearted giant Matvei is having trouble acclimating; to him, the city seems dirty, deafening, and inhospitable. One day he gets lost among the crowd, which sets off a series of adventures that only strengthens his desire to return home.
