Daniel Zimmer will do almost anything to end his pain--except for the one thing that might work.  Growing up in 1970s Brooklyn under the shadow of his tyrannical father and against the backdrop of the Son of Sam murders, the Karen Ann Quinlan tragedy, and the New York Yankees' back-to-back championship seasons, Daniel Zimmer struggles to find a sense of safety and belonging. Daniel and his brother Max find moments of solace in the rebellious rhythms of early punk and metal bands like the Ramones and Judas Priest. But when faced with an unexpected family tragedy--for which he feels responsible--Daniel discovers the magical escape that alcohol can provide, numbing his pain and guilt.  Carrying the trauma of his youth into adulthood, Daniel falls deeper into alcoholism as he fights to face life on life's terms. Then, just as he finally begins to embrace sobriety, Max attempts suicide and Daniel's ex-fiancée makes an unexpected reappearance. Forced to face his demons head-on, Daniel struggles to take things one day at a time. Flashing through Daniel's life, past and present, this nostalgic ode to Brooklyn is an unflinching account of the inevitable ups and downs of recovery and coming of age. Ultimately, it is a story of the ravages of generational abuse and the power of recognizing addiction and opening the door to the possibilities of redemption. … (mehr)

While heartfelt and well-intentioned, and compelling in some of its details, this memoir calling itself a novel suffers from a too-tight focus on the narrator and his family (their conversations, clothes, food, all pretty much what you'd expect), while the backdrop against which their relentless tragedies take place almost completely disappears. I got drawn back in every time Brooklyn showed up as a place I could see, hear and smell, and I appreciated the references to events of the day, and particularly Eon's inclusion of key songs and concerts as emotional and temporal markers. I wish there'd been more of that. Strangely absent from the historical references and yet key to any description of that time and place: the 1980s racial incidents that set the boroughs on fire: Howard Beach, Bensonhurst, the Central Park 5. The books was painfully relatable, when I first wanted to read this book I didn’t think it would be but the deeper I got into Daniel’s story the more I had to take moments to just sit with my thoughts. There is a part early on when he first starts his journey with rock n’ roll and he says we had found a way outside of ourselves,

Normally I don’t like when chapters go back and forth between past and present but this was was well done. Intergenerational trauma is real and this book does a good job at showing how it happens and the struggles to try to break out and heal.

Initially, it was difficult to keep up with the changes in time and place but once the main characters are established it becomes easier. Daniel comes from a traumatic home and the nation is also realizing traumatic events. Daniel tries to find his way by abusing alcohol which is also his father's path but gradually after painful episodes, recurring demons, and heartbreak his way forward becomes clear.

This novel is an emotional roller coaster and I find myself rooting hard for Daniel to succeed and find the peace he needs.

This is a very good book with captivating characters..

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book! It’s not one of the usual genres I read, but I thought the premise sounded very interesting - and indeed, it was. Eon did a great job building Daniel’s character and created a very realistic story about intergenerational trauma and addiction. The story was compelling and drew me in right from the start. I don’t usually enjoy reading books that flip back and forth between multiple timelines, but Eon wove the two timelines of Daniel’s childhood and adulthood together seamlessly and in a way that helped moved the story forward. I highly recommend this book! ( )

This novel is Daniel Zimmer’s attempt to make some sense of his life. Growing up in 1970’s Brooklyn with an abusive father and becoming an alcoholic at a young age, it shifts back from the seventies to now as the reader learns how Daniel’s childhood makes him who he is as an adult. It begins with Daniel dealing with his brother Max’s suicide attempt, which is definitely pulled me in. Daniel deals with grief, failure, first love, trying to live his dream and more. This was certainly an emotional novel for sure and I enjoyed it very much. ( )
