This book organizes genealogy information in a clear and concise manner and would be helpful for newbies and more experienced people. It gives family researchers ideas to continue their search for family members. It particularly would be good for people just starting out.

This book is very helpful and easy to understand. If you are a beginner in genealogy or have been doing it for awhile this book would.be good to read. I found the chapter on DNA helpful. If you just want to start your genealogy adventure or refresh your knowledge this book is for you. It is written so anyone can understand it in clear and concise terms. I recommend this book.

This book is slightly more satisfying than the author's earlier volume Software Tools for Genealogy: Digital Tools for Tracing Family History in that it doesn't waste quite as many words on trailing what's coming up in the next chapter and, at least in the earlier part, gives some useful pointers to types of records beyond basic births, marriages and deaths, and using libraries and archives to find them. The latter part of the book, however, has a lot of filler - speculation on future technological developments and organising family reunions amongst it. Like the other book there's also useful information on DNA testing and some thoughtful notes on ethics and online sharing of personal information. There's also a chapter on further reading (though two of the books are listed twice) and links to experts in various fields. It's quite superficial and anyone who's already progressed beyond the basics probably won't learn much new, but it may be useful to those just thinking about that next step.

This book is a helpful guide to resources available for someone who is getting started with genealogical research. The chapters are well-organized and concise, and include useful tips on ethics and security. I am not sure I would call the suggestions "advanced" however, as this feels more like a basic survey of the tools one can use. Written in an approachable style, with anecdotes sprinkled throughout to illustrate what is possible. ( )

Although this book packs in a lot of information, it does so in small bites. In some cases this is just what you need to get started, in others it leaves you with more questions. If you are serious about researching your genealogy, and don't have access to a professional researcher, these books (as this author has several on this topic) are a great starting point. ( )
