It is September 1938 and during a heatwave Europe tensely awaits the outcome of the Munich conference, where they will learn if there is to be a war. In Paris people are waiting too, among them Mathieu, Jacques and Philippe, each wrestling with their own love affairs, doubts and angsts - and none of them ready to fight. The second volume in Sartre's wartime Roads to Freedomtrilogy, The Reprievecuts between locations and characters to build an impressionistic collage of the hopes, fears and self-deception of an entire continent as it blinkers itself against the imminent threat of war. Outstanding insight into the events preceding the incorporation of the Sudetenland into the German Nazi Reich in 1938. Sartre's depiction is a collage with many, very personal, impressions from a variety of people, predominantly from France. The novel is not a historical narrative, as the facts are only noted in passing, somewhere in between. The various contributions ultimately create an intense impression of the events at the time and explain in a very subjective way how Hitler and the Nazis could get away with it. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the book has become very relevant again, as the occurrences of that time can be well compared with today's situation. Thus, the book offers some information that can be well used to understand the current global situation. Sartre published the book after the end of World War II and thus had enough time to consider the effects of the events at the time while writing the book. ( )
