A Rose for Her Grave - the principal story of this collection - vividly recreates the cautionary tale of Randy Roth, a misogynistic sociopath from the Pacific Northwest whose rage was directed primarily at women and children. Addicted to his own greed, Roth exercised a powerful aura of control over his victims, using his ability to charm and boyish good looks to lower their defences. By the time they saw the reality of the madness in his eyes, it was usually too late. This, along with five other chilling cases, bears the stamp of classic Ann Rule - informed, comprehensive, and eerily evocative of man's inhumanity to man.… (mehr)

I liked the opening story (although I thought the courtroom part was a drag because it repeated a lot we already knew). I was not fond of the shorter crime stories in the back. An ok true crime read. ( )

The centerpiece to this look at murder cases is Rule focusing on the case of Randy Roth. Rule calls him a modern day Bluebeard and the comparison is apt.

Roth we find truly hates women and woos with the plan to marry them in order to collect their insurance.

The first case is set up in typical Rule fashion. She goes into Roth and his victims background. This book differs slightly due to the time between two victims and Roth's apparent plans for more in between. Roth focuses on the women in this case more than usual and I think it's because of Roth's hatred towards women. I did like how Rule got into how hard it was and still is for female police officers and prosecutors due to them being seen as "bitchy" or mean if they raise their voices. Due to the high stakes with Roth when he is brought to trial it was very insightful to get into everyone's heads for this one.

After the main case then Rule goes into five bonus cases. Not all ended satisfactory (bad guys brought to justice) or I just wished for more details. ( )

(I said it was short)
The first story is apparently about Randy Roth. So might re read. ( )

Very well researched, the retelling of each case covers not just the women who lost their lives shortly after marrying Roth, but the neighbors and friends that were positively—and then negatively—impacted by his fictitious posturing. The man, like other monsters famed for taking the lives of others, is like a chameleon. He can play the part he needs to best achieve his own ends.
