The book talks about the life cycle of rocks and is filled with wonderful pictures and information about all the places and types of rocks that inhabit our Earth. This book is non-fiction and the media used is real life pictures. ELIB 530A LibraryThing – Part E – identification This very straightforward and simple book is a great introduction to the three main groups of rocks on earth. The beginning of the book gives a list of words that readers are asked to look for as they read through the book and a glossary at the end of the book reinforces those words again. The 5th chapter gives a brief yet thorough look at the rock cycle and it is followed by a list of additional resources that can be accessed via book and website formats. I was a rock collector as a kid and this book would have been really great to have. So many rock identification books were just too complicated and dense to hold my interest for very long as a child. I would have stuck with this one. There is a large full color photograph on every page of the book that holds the readers interest and helps explain or illustrate the material the text is covering. This book is very appropriate for young readers. Walker, Sally M. Rocks. Minneapolis: Lerner Publications, 2007. Print. “Rocks” by accomplished science author, Sally M. Walker is appropriate for the ages of about 7 to 10. It contains easy to understand language, introducing the reader to the world of rocks. Keeping the young audience in mind, the amount of information presented is sufficient. Some of the topics covered, are the definition of a rock, “igneous” and “sedimentary rocks”, as well as “the rock cycle”. Clearly the facts presented in “Rocks” are accurate. The language in the book is also vivid and interesting. Thus the following is a description of granite; “It is made of bits of light-colored and dark-colored minerals. The bits are all jumbled up” (Walker, 38). Other useful information “Rocks” includes are a contents, “A Note to Adults on Sharing a Book” with children, a list of additional resources, a glossary and an index. The text is well set out, with the font being relatively large and spaced out. The photos in “Rocks” are both interesting and attractive, as well as being relevant to the text. Furthermore they’re all clearly labeled. Zeige 5 von 5 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
