The writers include Blake, Dickinson, Tennyson, Yeats, Wordsworth, and Keats. The captivating paintings by Simona Mulazanni make every page a delight. And the subject—animals, big and small, wild and tame— has an irresistible appeal to children. William Blake’s “The Tyger” burns bright in the lush image that accompanies the verse. Hillaire Belloc pays tribute to an elephant in a short, witty stanza accompanied by an adorable picture of the creature sitting on a small wood stool. Among the other poems are Marianne Moore’s “A Jellyfish” and Edward Lear’s charming, songlike “The Owl and the Pussycat.” A Selection of Scholastic Book Clubs. John Hollander has written A Crackling of Thorns (chosen by W. H. Auden for the Yale Series of Younger Poets), as well as literary criticism and children’s books. He has served as editor for many poetry collections, among them An Anthology of Poems for Young People (with Harold Bloom). He is currently the Sterling Professor of English at Yale. Summary: This book has poems about animals from different authors such as Robert Frost's "The Oven Bird" on page thirteen. Poems are also accompanied by John Hollander's summary of the poem and/or information of the poet; and points of interest with John Hollander's meaning of a word or group of words in the poem.

Reaction: I enjoyed the poems. The added editing by John Hollander was helpful in understanding the poems.

Extension: This would be very useful to use as a tool for helping children understand how to read poetry and how to find the meaning of the poems.

A great collection of poetry from famous poets about animals. This would be read to middle aged students who were learning poetry. Or it would be fun to read during science when learning about animals and/or the animal kingdoms. ( )

The toughest thing for me about this book, is that the text is printed right over very busy pictures of the animal the poem is about. It is very difficult to read, and creates some tension, which distracts from the poetry. The forward is good, though long, and may only be truly appreciated by older students...but presented some well thought out concepts about animals, and their place in the world, in literature, in folklore, etc. I have to say, though, that a good broad selection of animals was used.

A good collection of animal poems. This book gives the young reader a sampling of various poets through poems about real and imaginary animals. ( )
